Overview

Enter a brutal dystopian future where technology intended to save humanity has become one of its greatest threats in The Surge for PlayStation 4, the challenging science-fiction action RPG from Deck13 Interactive and Focus Entertainment.

Set inside the enormous industrial complex of the megacorporation CREO, The Surge puts you in the role of Warren, a newly recruited worker whose first day on the job turns into a nightmare following a catastrophic incident.

Warren awakens after an excruciating procedure with a heavy industrial exoskeleton permanently attached to his body. The CREO facility is in ruins, robots have gone out of control, augmented workers have become violent and a rogue artificial intelligence appears determined to kill anything standing in its way.

Survival requires considerably more than repeatedly attacking enemies.

The Surge uses a highly tactical combat system where individual enemy body parts can be targeted separately. Attack an unarmoured limb for a quicker kill, or deliberately attack an armoured body part and sever it to obtain the equipment attached to it.

This creates a distinctive risk-versus-reward progression system.

Want a particular helmet, weapon or armour component?

You may need to target the enemy wearing it, survive the more difficult fight and then perform a finishing dismemberment to claim the part.

Collected equipment can then be:

• Crafted
• Upgraded
• Installed onto Warren's exosuit
• Combined with implants
• Used to create specialised combat builds

The result is a demanding action RPG centred on precision, stamina management, equipment optimisation and learning enemy attack patterns.

Combat takes place in real time and rewards careful positioning. Warren can dodge, block, duck, jump and use his exoskeleton to perform powerful attacks, but careless aggression can quickly result in death.

The standard PS4 version is a single-player experience. PlayStation officially lists 1 player, Remote Play support and DUALSHOCK 4 vibration, with no online multiplayer or cooperative mode.

The Surge was also enhanced for PS4 Pro, with Focus confirming a performance update providing a choice between approximately Dynamic 4K at 30fps or 1080p at 60fps, followed by HDR support through an additional update.
